Short answer

Suspected stroke is a medical emergency: note when symptoms started, call emergency services immediately, keep the person safe and follow the operator's instructions.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Recognising a possible stroke

Warning signs may include a suddenly drooping face, weakness or numbness on one side, difficulty speaking or understanding, sudden vision change, loss of balance, or a severe unusual headache. Symptoms can be brief and still require emergency assessment. Stroke may result from a blocked or bleeding blood vessel in the brain. Atrial fibrillation, hypertension and type 2 diabetes can increase stroke risk, but a person cannot identify the cause from symptoms at home.

What to do immediately

Use a simple face, arm and speech check if it does not delay the call. Record the exact time the person was last known well and when symptoms were noticed. Call emergency services and describe the signs clearly; request ambulance transport rather than driving. Keep the person resting in a safe position, reassure them and monitor breathing. Do not give food, drink or medicines, including aspirin, unless directed by emergency professionals. Gather their medicines and medical information if this can be done without delay.

When emergency care is needed

Every sudden stroke-like symptom needs emergency help, even if it improves. Call immediately for new weakness, numbness, speech trouble, facial drooping, confusion, vision loss, severe dizziness or an abrupt severe headache. If the person becomes unresponsive or is not breathing normally, follow the emergency operator's resuscitation instructions. Do not wait for a GP appointment.

Questions after assessment

Ask which type of stroke or stroke-like event was suspected, what tests were performed, and which medicines and risk factors need review. Discuss blood pressure, diabetes and atrial fibrillation management, warning signs of recurrence, and the rehabilitation plan. A GP consultation can help coordinate ongoing care after hospital assessment.

Questions people ask

What if stroke symptoms disappear?

Call emergency services anyway. Brief symptoms may still signal a serious event requiring urgent assessment.

Can I drive someone with suspected stroke?
