Hertz describes how quickly a sound wave vibrates. Lower Hz tones sound deeper, while higher Hz tones sound sharper. During pure-tone audiometry, tones at several pitches are played through headphones or ear inserts. You respond when you hear each tone, and the clinician records the quietest level detected at each pitch. The pattern across pitches helps show whether hearing changes affect low, high, or a broad range of sounds.

Follow the clinician's instructions and respond only when you genuinely hear a tone, even if it is faint. Mention ear pain, recent loud-noise exposure, blocked ears, ringing, dizziness, or unequal hearing before testing. Results should be interpreted with the ear examination and your symptoms; a single Hz value does not describe hearing on its own. Earwax buildup can affect sound reaching the eardrum, while inner-ear conditions may need a different assessment.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for sudden hearing loss, especially in one ear, or hearing change with severe dizziness, facial weakness, intense ear pain, discharge, or a head injury. Do not delay because a previous test was reassuring if your hearing has changed since then.
