What should you know about healthy abdominal ultrasound?

Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of organs such as the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, pancreas, spleen, and nearby tissues. A clear report means the sonographer or radiologist did not identify an abnormality visible with that examination. Some problems, including early inflammation, bowel conditions, or causes outside the scanned area, may need another assessment. Gallstones, kidney stones, pancreatitis, or an inguinal hernia can require interpretation alongside your history and examination.

Read the report with the clinician who requested it and ask what was actually assessed. Follow the preparation instructions for any repeat scan; these may include avoiding food for a period so certain organs are easier to view. Keep a note of pain location, timing, fever, vomiting, bowel changes, and urinary symptoms. Get urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, a rigid or swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, fainting, blood in vomit or stool, yellowing of the skin, or fever with marked illness. A reassuring scan should not delay care when symptoms are severe or changing.

Ask which organs were visualised, whether the scan was limited, and whether your symptoms suggest blood tests, a different scan, or observation. Clarify which changes should prompt a return visit.
