Healed lichen planus: what to know

Lichen planus commonly presents with itchy, firm bumps or patches that can flatten as inflammation settles. The affected skin may remain darker or lighter than its original tone, particularly after prolonged irritation or scratching. These marks can be more noticeable than the inactive condition itself. Healing on the skin does not rule out lichen planus affecting the mouth, scalp, nails, or genital area, where symptoms can be different.

New purple or reddish bumps, renewed itch, thickening, sores, or persistent mouth discomfort deserve assessment. A single lingering colour change is not the same as active inflammation, but an examination can distinguish them.

Use fragrance-free cleanser and moisturiser, keep nails short, and reduce rubbing or scratching. Sun protection can help prevent healed marks from becoming more contrasting. Use topical corticosteroids only according to the prescribed plan; oral corticosteroid treatment may be considered for selected widespread or difficult flares, but it requires clinician supervision. Keep a note of new areas, mouth symptoms, nail changes, or medicines started before a recurrence.

Arrange dermatology review for rapidly spreading bumps, severe itch that disrupts sleep, painful or ulcerated skin, scalp hair loss, nail damage, or sores in the mouth or genital area. Seek prompt care for difficulty swallowing, eye symptoms, or a rapidly worsening rash. Medication changes should be discussed with a clinician because several conditions can resemble lichen planus.
