Headache on the left side of the head behind the eye

Behind-eye pain may accompany migraine, particularly when it is one-sided and throbbing or paired with nausea and light sensitivity. Pressure with a blocked nose, reduced smell, or thick discharge can occur with Chronic Sinusitis or a cold; itchy, watery eyes and sneezing can fit Allergic Rhinitis. A painful red eye, blurred vision, halos, marked light sensitivity, or pain when moving the eye points toward an eye concern rather than a simple headache and should not be ignored. The symptom's location does not establish a diagnosis.

Rest away from bright light and stop activities that intensify the pain. Do not press or rub the eye. If you wear contact lenses, remove them if the eye feels irritated. Hydrate, eat regularly, and note whether the pain is sudden or gradual, how long it lasts, and whether tearing, nasal symptoms, nausea, redness, or visual changes occur. Call emergency services for sudden extreme pain, sudden vision loss, weakness, numbness, confusion, trouble speaking, collapse, or a new drooping eyelid. A severe headache with fever and a stiff neck also needs immediate assessment.
