Headache, loss of appetite and fatigue

Influenza and COVID-19 can reduce appetite while causing headache, tiredness, fever, chills, cough, sore throat, or body aches. Gastroenteritis may bring nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, cramps, and fluid loss. Gastritis or a peptic ulcer can cause upper-abdominal discomfort, nausea, early fullness, or pain related to meals.

Hepatitis A may cause fatigue, poor appetite, nausea, abdominal discomfort, dark urine, pale stools, or yellowing of the skin and eyes. Depression can affect appetite, energy, sleep, concentration, and headache patterns. These symptoms do not point to one diagnosis; duration and associated signs guide assessment.

Take small, frequent sips of fluid and choose simple foods when tolerated, such as soup, rice, toast, or yoghurt. Rest and avoid alcohol. Record temperature, fluid intake, urine changes, abdominal pain, bowel symptoms, weight change, mood, and any new medicine.

Arrange a clinician appointment if appetite remains low, fatigue limits usual activities, headaches recur, or symptoms continue after an expected short illness. Do not stop prescribed medicines suddenly, and do not use leftover antibiotics. A clinician can decide whether examination or tests are needed.

Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, severe or sudden headache, stiff neck, weakness, trouble speaking, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, black stools, yellow skin or eyes, chest pain, or breathing difficulty. Immediate help is also needed if exhaustion is extreme or symptoms are rapidly worsening.

Ask whether your symptoms fit an infection, stomach condition, liver problem, medicine effect, or mood-related change. Mention recent travel, sick contacts, alcohol, appetite and weight changes, stool or urine changes, and any low mood or loss of interest. Ask which warning signs should bring you back sooner.
