Short answer

A headache at the end of your period can reflect hormonal change, migraine, dehydration, missed meals or another cause, so track the pattern and treat warning signs seriously.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Useful record
Note timing, pain features, bleeding, sleep, food, fluids and medicines.
Pattern clue
Repeated headaches linked to the same stage of the cycle merit a clinician review.

What the timing may mean

Hormone levels shift around menstruation, and some people notice a migraine or tension-type headache as bleeding tapers. Low fluid intake, lighter eating, poor sleep, emotional strain, heat exposure or caffeine changes can add to the discomfort. A throbbing pain, nausea, or sensitivity to light and sound fits a migraine pattern; pressure around the head or neck can fit a tension pattern. Nasal congestion, fever or facial pressure may point toward an illness such as Allergic Rhinitis, Chronic Sinusitis or a Common Cold. Headache alone cannot identify its cause.

What you can do today

Drink fluids regularly, eat a balanced meal, rest in a quiet dim room if light worsens the pain, and use a cool or warm compress according to what feels soothing. Keep caffeine and sleep times steady rather than making abrupt changes. Record the start and end of the headache, bleeding days, pain location, associated symptoms, medicines used and possible triggers. A pharmacist or clinician can help you choose a suitable pain reliever, especially if you are pregnant, have another medical condition or take regular medicines.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for a sudden severe headache, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, fainting, confusion, a stiff neck with fever, repeated vomiting, vision loss, or a headache after a head injury. Arrange a clinical review if this pattern keeps returning, becomes harder to control, changes from your usual headaches, or occurs with heavy bleeding, marked tiredness or dizziness. Fever with severe headache after travel or mosquito exposure also deserves prompt assessment; Dengue Fever is one condition a clinician may consider.

Questions for your doctor

Could this pattern be menstrual migraine or tension-type headache? Should I keep a headache and period diary? Which pain medicines are appropriate for me, and when should I avoid them? Do my other symptoms suggest dehydration, an infection or another problem?

Questions people ask

No. Hormonal migraine is one possibility, but tension, dehydration, missed meals, sleep changes and illness can also cause headache.

When should a recurring period-related headache be checked?

Book a review when it repeats, changes, interferes with daily life or does not respond to your usual plan.
