Headache and stomach ache: what it may mean

The two symptoms can appear together when vomiting, diarrhoea, poor appetite, or sweating reduces fluid intake and causes dehydration. A viral illness may cause headache, nausea, abdominal discomfort, fever, or body aches. Heat exhaustion can also combine head pain with weakness, thirst, nausea, and heavy sweating. Stress and anxiety may disturb digestion while tightening scalp or neck muscles. The location of stomach pain, its relation to meals, and the presence of fever or bowel changes help a clinician narrow the possibilities.

Keep track of fluid intake, urine changes, bowel symptoms, fever, recent food, travel, sick contacts, and any new medicine.

Rest and take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. If nausea is present, choose light foods when ready and avoid alcohol and heavy meals. Move away from heat and loosen tight clothing if you have been outdoors. Do not take anti-inflammatory pain medicine on an empty stomach, and check that any product is suitable for you. Wash hands carefully if vomiting or diarrhoea suggests an infectious illness.

Seek urgent help for severe or localised abdominal pain, a rigid or very tender abdomen, blood in vomit or stool, black stool, fainting, confusion, inability to keep fluids down, or very little urine. A sudden severe headache, new weakness, speech difficulty, seizure, or fever with a stiff neck is an emergency. Arrange prompt review when symptoms persist, recur, worsen, or occur during pregnancy or with a significant medical condition.

Ask whether you need tests, how to replace fluids, which pain medicines are appropriate, and what change should prompt immediate care. Describe the abdominal location, severity, stool or vomit changes, and timing of the headache.
