Headache after orgasm in females: what to know

Some people develop aching as sexual excitement builds, while others feel an abrupt, explosive pain at orgasm. Neck and scalp muscle tightening may contribute to a primary headache. However, a sudden severe headache can also signal bleeding or another problem involving blood vessels in the brain. The first episode, a different pattern, or pain with pregnancy, recent childbirth or neurological symptoms should not be self-diagnosed.

Stop sexual activity when pain begins and note whether it builds gradually or reaches maximum intensity at once. Rest in a quiet place, avoid driving if you feel unwell, and arrange prompt medical advice for a first or unusually intense episode. A clinician may ask about blood pressure, medicines, pregnancy possibility, neurological symptoms and the timing of the pain before deciding what tests are needed.

Call emergency services for a sudden severe headache, fainting, confusion, seizure, weakness, numbness, trouble speaking, vision loss, repeated vomiting, fever with a stiff neck, or collapse. Seek urgent assessment as well for a new severe headache during pregnancy or soon after giving birth.
