Short answer

Head and neck cancer treatment is tailored to the tumour’s site, stage, general health, and goals, and may combine surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and rehabilitation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How treatment may fit together

The head and neck include the mouth, throat, voice box, nose, sinuses, salivary glands, and nearby lymph nodes. Treatment differs because a plan must control the cancer while protecting breathing, swallowing, speech, appearance, and hearing where possible. Tumour removal surgery may be used for a cancer that can be removed directly. A neck dissection may examine or remove lymph nodes when spread to the neck is a concern. Radiotherapy can be given after surgery or as the main local treatment. Chemotherapy or immunotherapy may be added to affect cancer cells throughout the body or to strengthen treatment for selected cancers.

Support is part of care, not an afterthought. Nutrition support can help when chewing or swallowing becomes difficult, while cancer rehabilitation may address speech, swallowing, movement, fatigue, or returning to daily activities.

Preparing for your plan

Ask the team to explain the purpose, order, and expected effects of each treatment. Bring a list of medicines, supplements, dental concerns, and any changes in swallowing, voice, weight, or pain. A dental review may be useful before radiotherapy to the mouth or jaw. Arrange help with meals, transport, and communication if treatment affects your energy or speech. Report new difficulty swallowing, reduced fluid intake, mouth sores, fever, or breathing changes promptly so the team can adjust supportive care.

When urgent help is needed

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, rapidly increasing swelling of the face or neck, inability to swallow saliva, heavy bleeding, confusion, or sudden weakness. Contact your oncology team promptly for fever, dehydration, uncontrolled pain, repeated vomiting, or a sudden change in speech or swallowing. These symptoms need assessment because treatment effects, infection, bleeding, or airway problems can require rapid care.

Questions for your doctor

Which area is being treated, and what is the aim of each treatment? How might the plan affect swallowing, speech, teeth, taste, or breathing? Will I need a dietitian, speech and swallowing specialist, or rehabilitation referral? Which symptoms should prompt a same-day call?

Questions people ask

Can head and neck cancer treatment use more than one approach?

Yes. Surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or immunotherapy may be combined when this offers a suitable balance between cancer control and side-effect management.

Why might nutrition support be recommended?

Mouth or throat treatment can make chewing and swallowing harder, so nutrition support helps maintain hydration and nourishment during care.
