A small camera with illumination guides the examination, while the live image lets the clinician and patient see the area being assessed. The view may reveal wax, irritation, discharge, a foreign object, or changes around the eardrum. Screen viewing can make it easier to explain findings and compare observations, but image quality depends on the ear canal and the device does not replace a full clinical history or hearing assessment.

Describe when symptoms began and mention pain, blocked hearing, ringing, discharge, dizziness, surgery, or recent swimming. Keep objects out of the ear before the appointment. During the examination, stay still and report sharp pain or dizziness immediately. Ask the clinician to explain what the image shows and whether the next step is ear care, monitoring, hearing testing, or another consultation.

Get urgent medical assessment for sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, facial weakness, significant injury, or blood or clear fluid from the ear after trauma. Prompt review is also sensible for fever with worsening ear pain, swelling behind the ear, or persistent discharge. A child who seems very unwell or is not responding normally needs immediate attention.

Ask whether the canal and eardrum were fully visible, what finding explains your symptoms, and whether the image can be used to discuss follow-up. Check which treatments are safe, when hearing should be tested, and which warning signs require urgent review.
