What should you know about HD otoscope?

The device has a light and viewing system that helps a clinician inspect the ear canal for wax, swelling, discharge, or a foreign object. It also helps them examine the eardrum for changes in colour, position, or visible damage. A clear view can support decisions about whether symptoms need treatment, observation, hearing assessment, or specialist review; the instrument itself does not diagnose every cause of ear pain.

Tell the clinician about ear pain, drainage, reduced hearing, dizziness, previous ear surgery, or a possible object in the ear. Do not insert cotton buds or other items to prepare the canal. The examination is usually brief, but mention discomfort as it happens so the angle and pressure can be adjusted. Follow the plan given after the findings are explained.

Seek urgent assessment for sudden hearing loss, severe vertigo, facial weakness, swelling behind the ear, or a head injury followed by blood or clear fluid from the ear. Arrange a timely review for persistent pain, worsening discharge, fever, or hearing change. Children who are unusually sleepy, difficult to settle, or struggling to respond should be assessed promptly.

Ask what was visible, whether wax or infection could explain the symptoms, and whether the eardrum could be seen clearly. Clarify which drops or pain measures are suitable, what changes should prompt review, and whether a hearing test is needed.
