What should you know about having cold hands?

The body narrows blood vessels in the hands to conserve heat. Stress, nicotine and some medicines can have a similar effect. Anaemia or iron deficiency anaemia may occur with tiredness, breathlessness or pale skin. Hypothyroidism can present with feeling cold, low energy, dry skin or constipation. Peripheral arterial disease may cause reduced circulation, especially if one hand is colder, painful or changes colour. Cold hands alone do not establish any of these conditions.

Warm your hands gradually with gloves, dry clothing and gentle movement. Avoid placing numb fingers directly against very hot surfaces. Keep a note of triggers, duration, colour changes, pain, tingling and whether both hands are affected. A clinician can review your medicines and consider blood tests or circulation checks when symptoms are ongoing. Do not begin iron supplementation without advice, because the cause of anaemia needs to be identified.

Get urgent help if one hand suddenly becomes cold, pale or blue, or if there is severe pain, weakness, loss of feeling or difficulty moving it. Arrange a prompt appointment for sores that do not heal, repeated colour changes, worsening pain, or coldness that interferes with daily activities. Seek review sooner if cold hands occur with chest discomfort, fainting or significant breathlessness.
