What should you know about a hard tiny lump under the skin?

A lump that sits within or beneath the skin can feel firm even when it is harmless. A cyst may have a smooth surface and remain stable; an inflamed follicle or boil can become tender, warm, or red. A scar-like nodule may stay firm for a long time. A new growth that crusts, bleeds, repeatedly breaks down, or does not heal deserves an in-person assessment; basal cell carcinoma can present as a persistent skin growth, but a lump alone does not identify its cause.

Notice whether it is changing in size, colour, texture, or sensitivity. Record when you first noticed it and whether friction, shaving, or an injury preceded it.

Do not squeeze, puncture, or repeatedly press the area, because this can inflame the tissue or introduce infection. Wash gently, avoid rubbing from collars or straps, and take a clear photograph beside a familiar object for comparison. Arrange a routine dermatology review if the lump persists, keeps returning, or its diagnosis is unclear. Treatment depends on the finding and may include observation, drainage, removal, or a steroid injection into the skin for selected inflamed lesions.

Seek prompt medical care if the lump becomes rapidly larger, very painful, hot, red, drains pus, or is accompanied by fever. Arrange an appointment soon for bleeding, ulceration, a recurring scab, marked firmness with fixation, or a lesion that changes while the surrounding skin looks unusual. Sudden facial swelling or trouble breathing needs emergency help.

Ask: Is this in the skin, a follicle, or deeper tissue? Does it need monitoring, imaging, sampling, or removal? Which changes should prompt an earlier review? If treatment is suggested, ask what healing, dressing care, and recurrence signs to expect.
