Hard lump under the skin from an ingrown hair

An ingrown hair can create a firm, tender nodule, sometimes with redness, a visible trapped hair, or a small amount of drainage. Shaving, waxing, friction, and tightly curled hair can make this more likely. Repeated bumps may reflect follicle inflammation called Folliculitis or a pattern known as Razor Bumps. Small rough bumps in other areas may instead fit Keratosis Pilaris. The lump’s appearance and depth cannot confirm its cause by touch alone.

Pause shaving, waxing, and tweezing over the area while it settles. Use a warm, clean compress for several minutes, keep the skin gently washed, and reduce rubbing from clothing. Do not dig for the hair, squeeze the lump, or use a sharp tool; these actions can push inflammation deeper and increase the chance of marks or infection.
