Hard Lump Under the Skin in the Groin

The groin has hair follicles, sweat, friction, and nearby lymph tissue, so the exact position matters. A surface lump may be sore after shaving or rubbing, while a deeper-feeling lump may need a broader examination. Note whether it is in the skin crease, near a hair, on one side, or associated with a visible skin change. Keep the area dry and gently clean, wear loose underwear, and pause shaving or products that sting. Do not squeeze, lance, or try to push the lump inward. Arrange a clinician visit if it persists, enlarges, returns, or makes walking or clothing uncomfortable. Depending on the examination, treatment might address a [Boil](/conditions/boils/) or another cause; a steroid injection into the skin is used only when clinically appropriate.

Seek prompt medical attention if the groin becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, or painful, or if pus, bleeding, fever, or marked illness develops. Rapid change, a fixed lump, or a persistent sore also warrants timely review. These warning signs do not establish a diagnosis.
