Hard lump on the side of my neck: what to know

A hard lump on the side of your neck needs a clinical assessment if it persists, grows, or comes with other symptoms. Neck lumps can involve a lymph node, salivary tissue, thyroid-related tissue, skin, or another structure. The texture and position provide clues, but feeling the lump cannot establish its cause.

Lymph nodes may enlarge while the body responds to an infection near the throat, ear, teeth, or skin. A firm lump that remains, becomes less movable, or is joined by voice change, swallowing difficulty, or unexplained weight loss deserves review. Head and Neck Cancer, Lymphoma, Thyroid Cancer, and Cancer of Unknown Primary are different diagnoses with different investigations; a neck lump does not identify which, if any, is present.

Arrange an appointment with a doctor or ear, nose and throat specialist. Note when you first noticed the lump, whether it changes in size, whether it moves under gentle pressure, and any recent infection, dental problem, skin lesion, or injury. Do not repeatedly squeeze or massage it. Assessment may include an examination of the mouth and throat, imaging, blood tests, or a needle sample, depending on the findings.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, rapidly increasing swelling, inability to swallow fluids, or severe weakness. Request prompt medical review for a persistent lump, a lump that is enlarging or hard to move, night sweats, fever that does not settle, or symptoms such as persistent hoarseness or pain when swallowing.

Ask what structures lie beneath the lump, which findings make an enlarged lymph node more or less likely, whether imaging is appropriate, and when you should return if it does not change. If thyroid tissue is suspected, ask whether Thyroid Removal Surgery is relevant now or only after a diagnosis.
