What should you know about a hard lump inside the breast?

A deeper-feeling lump may be normal dense tissue, a cyst, a fibroadenoma, inflammation, or another benign breast change. A breast lump is a common presentation of breast cancer, while many people with lumps have a non-cancerous explanation. The clinician considers the lump’s borders, movement, tenderness, and relationship to the skin, chest wall, and menstrual cycle. Nipple changes, skin dimpling, discharge, or an armpit lump may alter which tests are useful.

Make an appointment and describe the exact area using a clock-face position or nearby landmark, without repeatedly prodding it. Write down when you noticed it and whether it changes with your cycle. Testing is chosen according to the examination rather than the word hard alone.

Contact a clinician promptly if the lump is new and persistent, enlarging, or associated with a nipple turning inward, skin pulling in, spontaneous discharge, or an armpit swelling.
