What should you know about a hard lump on the right side of the neck?

The right side of the neck contains chains of lymph nodes, muscles, blood vessels, salivary tissue, and part of the thyroid region. A node can enlarge after infection in the throat, ear, teeth, or nearby skin. A cyst or other benign tissue change can also feel firm. Persistent, fixed, or enlarging neck nodes may occur with lymphoma or head and neck cancer, and thyroid cancer may present as a thyroid-region lump. Cancer of unknown primary is used when cancer is identified but the starting site is not initially clear. A right-sided lump does not establish any of these diagnoses.

Book an appointment and describe the exact position, including whether it is under the jaw, beside the throat, near the collarbone, or behind the ear. Record onset, growth, tenderness, movement with swallowing, and recent infections or dental symptoms. Mention hoarseness, swallowing trouble, fever, night sweats, weight change, or fatigue. A clinician may examine the mouth, throat, ears, thyroid, and other nodes. Ultrasound, blood tests, or needle sampling may follow, depending on the findings. Avoid repeatedly prodding the area.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, choking, inability to swallow fluids, or rapidly increasing neck swelling. Seek prompt medical review for a lump that is hard and fixed, continues to enlarge, or accompanies persistent hoarseness, unexplained weight loss, drenching night sweats, or ongoing fever. These features determine urgency while testing determines the cause.

Ask whether the lump feels like a lymph node, thyroid change, or another structure. Ask if ultrasound or sampling is appropriate, whether your mouth or teeth could be contributing, and how long monitoring should last. Ask which new symptoms should prompt an earlier visit.
