What should you know about hard lump between breasts?

The space between the breasts contains the breastbone and the joints where ribs meet cartilage, as well as skin and soft tissue. A prominent joint, inflamed cartilage, blocked skin gland, scar, or breast tissue near the inner edge can feel hard. Pain that changes with movement or pressing may suggest a chest-wall source, but this is not a diagnosis. Observe whether the area moves with the skin, hurts with a deep breath or arm movement, or changes during your menstrual cycle. Note recent exercise, coughing, trauma, skin irritation, breastfeeding, or surgery because these details help the clinician decide whether breast or chest-wall assessment is needed.

Get prompt medical advice for rapid growth, severe pain, redness or warmth, fever, or drainage from the skin. Arrange breast assessment without delay for a fixed lump, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, unusual discharge, or a change in either breast. Chest pain with breathlessness, faintness, or spreading pressure needs emergency care rather than routine lump follow-up.

Ask whether the lump is in breast tissue or the chest wall, whether imaging is appropriate, and which symptoms should change the urgency. Describe its exact position relative to the breastbone and whether movement affects it.
