The device records forced breathing manoeuvres and displays values that reflect airflow and lung volume. Results can vary with effort, posture, technique, age, body size, and current symptoms. A home reading is useful for tracking change when the same method is used, but it does not by itself diagnose asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease, or another cause of breathlessness. Formal spirometry may include repeated blows and medicine testing under supervision.

Use the mouthpiece supplied with the device and follow the instructions from your clinician. Sit or stand as advised, seal your lips firmly, inhale fully, then blow hard and fast for as long as instructed. Repeat only as directed and record the date, symptoms, and relevant medicines. Keep the mouthpiece clean and do not share it. If coughing, dizziness, chest discomfort, or poor technique affects the attempt, note this rather than treating the number as reliable.

Seek urgent medical care for severe breathlessness at rest, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, chest pain, or difficulty speaking in full sentences. Contact your clinician promptly when readings repeatedly fall from your usual pattern, or when wheezing and breathlessness are worsening despite the prescribed plan. A reassuring device result should not delay care when symptoms are severe.
