Hand swelling without pain: what to know

Fluid can collect in the tissues after prolonged sitting, standing, heat exposure, or keeping the hand down for a long time. Some medicines and health conditions can also alter fluid balance. Mild swelling may feel soft, leave a temporary impression after pressure, or make rings and watches tighter.

No pain does not rule out a problem. One-sided swelling, a new lump, reduced movement, colour change, numbness, or swelling that keeps returning gives a reason for clinical review. Compare both hands and note whether the change is worse at a particular time of day.

Remove tight rings, gently move the fingers, and elevate the hand while resting. Avoid keeping the wrist bent or the hand hanging down for long periods. Record possible triggers, recent activities, new medicines, and whether the swelling improves overnight.

Book an appointment if the swelling lasts, recurs, affects both hands without an obvious trigger, or comes with swelling elsewhere. Do not stop prescribed medicine based on swelling alone; ask the prescriber or pharmacist to review it.

Seek urgent help for sudden swelling with breathing difficulty, chest discomfort, facial or tongue swelling, faintness, or confusion. Prompt assessment is also needed if the hand becomes hot, red, very tight, numb, weak, or pale or blue.

Ask what could be causing painless swelling, whether your medicines or general health may contribute, and which examination or tests are appropriate. Bring notes about timing, symmetry, triggers, and changes in urination or swelling in the feet.
