Hand swelling after a mosquito bite: what to know

A bite can trigger a local immune reaction, leaving a raised, itchy area around the bite. Because the hand has limited space and contains many small joints and tendons, swelling may make fingers feel tight or movement awkward. Mild redness and warmth can occur, but they should not steadily worsen.

The bite itself does not explain every swollen hand. Increasing pain, pus, fever, or redness that extends along the hand or arm can indicate infection or another problem. A retained splinter, sting, injury, or joint inflammation may need a different assessment.

Gently wash the area, apply a cool clean compress, and keep the hand raised when resting. Avoid scratching, since broken skin can allow bacteria in. Remove rings early if the fingers are beginning to swell.

A pharmacist can advise whether an anti-itch product or oral antihistamine is appropriate for your age, pregnancy status, health conditions, and current medicines. Do not apply irritating household substances or tightly wrap the hand.

Get emergency help for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, wheezing, difficulty breathing, dizziness, or widespread hives. Seek prompt medical review for fever, pus, severe pain, rapidly expanding redness, red streaks, numbness, or fingers that become pale or blue.

Ask whether the reaction still looks local, whether infection treatment is needed, and which product is safe for you. Tell the clinician when the bite occurred, how quickly the swelling changed, and whether you have had similar reactions.
