Hand swelling and pain

Pain after a fall, twist, or impact may involve a sprain, tendon injury, or fracture. Warmth and redness can accompany inflammation or infection, especially when there is a wound. Tingling, weakness, or pain that travels into the fingers may involve a nerve. Symptoms in several finger joints, particularly with recurring stiffness, may indicate an inflammatory condition. The location, trigger, timing, and movement that worsens pain are useful clues.

Rest from the activity that triggered symptoms, remove tight rings, and raise the hand. A wrapped cold pack may ease recent swelling; avoid placing ice directly on skin. Get urgent help for a visibly deformed hand, severe pain after injury, rapidly spreading redness, fever with a swollen joint, or a deep or contaminated wound. Emergency assessment is needed if fingers become cold, blue, or numb, or if you suddenly cannot move them.
