Hand, Foot and Mouth Rash All Over the Body: What to Know

A widespread eruption may include flat spots, raised bumps, or small blisters, with or without itch. Hand, foot and mouth disease often has mouth discomfort and lesions on the hands or feet, but the full pattern and timing matter more than one area alone. Atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, drug rash, heat rash, intertrigo, psoriasis, ringworm, and scabies can also produce broad or multiple-area changes. A new medicine, household product, travel exposure, or sick contact can provide useful context.

Take a clear photo in good light and note when the rash began, where it started, and whether it is spreading. Use lukewarm water and fragrance-free products, avoid scratching, and wear loose clothing. Do not apply several new creams at once, because this can irritate the skin and obscure the pattern. Encourage fluids if there are mouth sores, and avoid sharing towels, clothing, cups, or bedding until the cause is clearer.

Arrange prompt assessment for a rapidly spreading rash, persistent fever, significant pain, pus, facial swelling, or mouth sores that interfere with drinking. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, faintness, confusion, severe dehydration, or skin that becomes blistered and very tender over large areas. A rash after a new medicine deserves prompt medical advice, especially if there are mouth, eye, or genital symptoms.
