Hand, Foot and Mouth Sore: What to Know

Mouth sores may appear on the tongue, gums or inside the cheeks and can make swallowing uncomfortable. Skin spots or small blisters may occur on the palms, soles, fingers, toes, legs or buttocks. Fever, sore throat and low appetite often provide useful context. A sore that looks like a pimple may instead relate to Acne, Folliculitis or another skin condition, so location and the rest of the illness should be considered together.

Give cool drinks and soft foods; avoid acidic, spicy or very hot items if they sting. Keep skin lesions clean, avoid bursting them, and wash hands after touching the area. Children should not take aspirin unless a clinician has prescribed it. Rest and monitor drinking rather than focusing only on the sore’s appearance.

Arrange urgent advice if the person cannot swallow fluids, is passing much less urine, is difficult to wake, has breathing difficulty, or develops a severe headache or stiff neck. Seek assessment when a skin sore becomes increasingly red, warm, swollen or draining pus, or when fever persists or the person deteriorates. Babies and people with weakened immune systems deserve a lower threshold for medical review.
