Is a hand, foot and mouth rash itchy?

Inflamed skin and small fluid-filled lesions can create itching, stinging, or soreness. The rash commonly affects the hands and feet, while painful mouth sores may make eating and drinking harder. Fever or general unwellness may occur at the same time. Itchy skin does not identify one diagnosis on its own: Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Drug Rash, Heat Rash, Intertrigo, Psoriasis, Ringworm, and Scabies can also produce rashes, but their patterns and treatments differ.

Use cool compresses, loose clothing, and breathable shoes. Keep nails trimmed, wash gently, and pat the skin dry rather than rubbing it. Try to prevent scratching because broken skin can become infected. Offer frequent fluids and soft, cool foods when mouth sores hurt. Ask a pharmacist or clinician about suitable fever or itch relief for the person’s age, and avoid applying multiple medicated creams without advice.

Seek medical advice if itching is severe, the person cannot sleep or drink, or lesions become increasingly painful, swollen, hot, or oozy. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, a stiff neck, marked confusion or drowsiness, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. A persistent, recurrent, or unusual rash deserves examination even if the person otherwise feels well.
