What should you know about hand foot and mouth buttocks?

The rash may be made up of red spots, bumps or small blisters and can be tender, itchy or irritated by nappies, sweat and friction. [Contact Dermatitis](/conditions/contact-dermatitis/) and [Heat Rash](/conditions/heat-rash/) are other explanations. The rest of the skin, mouth symptoms, fever and recent contacts help put the finding in context.

Clean gently after bowel movements, pat dry, change nappies promptly and allow brief nappy-free time when practical. Use loose breathable clothing and avoid fragranced wipes or new creams. Do not scratch, scrub or burst blisters. Wash hands carefully after nappy changes and do not share towels. A clinician can advise whether a barrier product is appropriate and whether the appearance needs testing.

Seek urgent help if the child is difficult to wake, cannot drink, has breathing difficulty, severe headache, stiff neck or rapidly worsening illness. Arrange prompt assessment if the rash becomes very painful, hot, swollen, wet or crusted, or if fever persists. New widespread rash in a young infant warrants medical advice even when the child seems comfortable.

Ask whether the buttock changes fit a viral rash or nappy irritation, which cleanser or barrier is suitable, and when the child can return to childcare.
