Can a hairline fracture occur without swelling?

Swelling reflects irritation and soft-tissue response around an injury; a small crack may not produce much of either. Pain that is sharply localized, worsens with impact or returns with walking can still fit a stress-related bone injury. Pause impact exercise and choose activities that do not reproduce the pain. Wear supportive footwear, keep walking within comfort, and avoid repeatedly pressing the sore spot to test it. Seek assessment for pain that remains in one precise area, worsens despite rest, or makes you limp.
