What should you know about a hairline fracture in the wrist?

Short answer

A hairline fracture in the wrist is a small crack that may need splinting, activity changes and follow-up to protect hand function.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Common effects
Local tenderness, swelling and reduced grip
Early protection
Support the wrist and avoid loading
Urgent concern
A cold, blue, pale or numb hand

What a wrist hairline fracture means

A small fracture can involve one of the wrist bones or the end of a forearm bone. Pain, tenderness, swelling and reduced grip may follow a fall, repeated loading or another force. Some wrist injuries are difficult to see on an early plain X-ray, especially when pain is focused near the thumb side. Examination and, when needed, repeat or advanced imaging help identify the bone involved and whether the joint is stable.

Protect the wrist while it is assessed

Remove rings if swelling is developing. Rest the hand from lifting, pushing, gripping and impact; keep the wrist supported in the splint recommended for you. Elevation and a wrapped cold pack may ease swelling, while the fingers should move gently if that is comfortable and permitted. Keep the splint dry, check the skin and do not alter its fit without advice. Rehabilitation can restore motion and strength after the clinician confirms that loading is appropriate.

When to seek care

Get urgent help if fingers become blue, pale, cold, numb or increasingly difficult to move, or if swelling rapidly worsens. Prompt assessment is also needed after a significant fall, visible deformity, an open wound, or pain that remains sharply localised despite rest.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which bone may be injured, how long the splint is needed, whether you may use the hand for work, when repeat imaging is appropriate, and which exercises protect wrist and finger motion without stressing the fracture.

Questions people ask

Can a wrist hairline fracture be missed on an X-ray?

Some small or early fractures are not immediately obvious. Persistent focal tenderness should be reviewed even when the first image is reassuring.

Should I keep moving my fingers?

Gentle finger movement may help limit stiffness, but follow the specific splint and movement instructions given for your injury.
