Hairline fracture in a metatarsal

Short answer
A hairline fracture in a metatarsal should be checked promptly, while walking and impact are reduced to protect the foot until its stability is known.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical symptom
- Focal foot pain with standing or push-off
- Early protection
- Reduce walking and avoid impact
- Urgent warning
- Deformity or altered toe colour, warmth or sensation
What the crack affects
Metatarsals are the long bones of the midfoot and forefoot. A small crack can cause pinpoint tenderness, swelling or bruising on top of the foot, with pain during push-off or when wearing a tight shoe. Some metatarsal fractures follow a trip, fall or dropped object; others develop from repeated loading and are called stress fractures. The painful area may be easier to identify than the fracture itself. Examination and imaging help determine the bone involved, alignment and safe amount of weight-bearing.
First steps for the foot
Stop running, jumping and long walks. Rest the foot, elevate it when possible and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods if swelling is present. Choose roomy footwear or follow instructions for a protective shoe or boot. Do not walk through sharp focal pain, and do not repeatedly bend the foot to check it. Arrange clinical assessment after a fall, direct blow or ongoing forefoot pain. Recovery plans may include protected weight-bearing, a support device, gradual mobility and physiotherapy.
When foot pain needs urgent care
Go to emergency care for an open wound, marked deformity, severe uncontrolled pain, or toes that become cold, pale, blue, numb or hard to move. Seek same-day assessment if you cannot walk safely, swelling is rapidly increasing, or the foot changes shape after injury. Persistent foot pain, a new limp or pain that returns with each step should be reviewed even if bruising is slight.
What to ask
Ask which metatarsal is affected, whether the fracture is aligned, and whether you need a boot, stiff-soled shoe or crutches. Confirm weight-bearing limits, suitable exercises, follow-up imaging and the point at which walking can increase. Discuss work and sport changes, and mention prior stress injuries or diagnosed Vitamin D Deficiency.

Questions people ask
Can a metatarsal hairline fracture be mistaken for a sprain?
Yes. Both can cause pain and swelling, so persistent pinpoint tenderness or difficulty walking should be assessed.
Can you walk on a suspected metatarsal fracture?
Walking may be possible, but avoid testing it repeatedly and follow clinical advice about weight-bearing and support.
