Hair transplant after 4 months: what to expect

Some transplanted hairs shed soon after surgery before their follicles begin a new growth cycle. At this stage, short hairs can look sparse, soft, or different in thickness from nearby hair. Mild scalp sensitivity, dryness, altered sensation, or small areas of redness may still occur, but these should generally trend in the right direction.

The result also depends on the original cause of thinning, donor-hair characteristics, graft placement, and whether surrounding hair loss is continuing. A photograph taken in the same lighting and angle can show change more reliably than a daily mirror check.

Follow the aftercare plan from your surgical team, wash and handle the scalp as instructed, and avoid picking at crusts or rubbing the graft area. Protect the scalp from strong sun and tell your clinician about any prescribed or recommended hair-loss treatment before starting, stopping, or changing it.

Arrange the planned review so the clinician can examine follicle growth and the donor area. If progress seems limited, the review can distinguish normal timing from a problem that needs attention.

Contact the clinic promptly for worsening pain, spreading redness, increasing warmth, pus-like drainage, fever, heavy bleeding, or sudden marked loss of transplanted or non-transplanted hair. These findings need an examination rather than comparison with online photographs.

Ask whether the current density and hair texture fit your expected recovery, whether the donor area is healing normally, when progress photographs should be taken, and how ongoing Male Pattern Hair Loss or Female Pattern Hair Loss may affect the surrounding hair.
