Hair Loss and Scalp Psoriasis: What to Know

Scalp psoriasis produces inflamed areas with thick scale that may extend beyond the hairline. Itching can lead to scratching or picking, which breaks hairs and irritates follicles. Scale can also make hair care uncomfortable, encouraging rough brushing or forceful attempts to lift flakes. The shedding is often related to active scalp inflammation or mechanical damage rather than permanent follicle loss. Hair can regrow when the scalp settles, but hair loss may also be caused by alopecia areata, pattern hair loss, scalp infection, or traction. Treat the scalp findings and the hair pattern as related but separate questions.

Follow the treatment plan prescribed for your scalp, and apply products to the skin rather than rubbing aggressively through the hair. Medicated shampoo may loosen scale or reduce inflammation when used as directed. Topical corticosteroids can calm flares, but the strength, amount, and duration should come from a clinician. Avoid scraping plaques, tight hairstyles, and harsh chemical services during a flare. If plaques remain difficult to control, a dermatologist may discuss other options such as excimer laser therapy. Take photographs when the scalp is active and when it improves.

Arrange review for bald patches, broken hairs, pus, crusting, severe pain, spreading redness, or a sudden change in the scalp. Seek advice when itching prevents sleep or treatment is not controlling the scale. A smooth patch, scarring, or eyebrow loss should not be assumed to be psoriasis and needs examination.
