What should you know about hair follicle spots?

Spots after shaving or waxing can be Razor Bumps, especially where curved hairs re-enter the skin. Tender, pus-filled bumps may fit Folliculitis. Blocked pores can occur with Acne or Hormonal Acne, while redness around the mouth may fit Perioral Dermatitis and facial flushing may fit Rosacea. The number of spots, their location, and whether they recur after hair removal help separate these possibilities; a spot does not by itself establish a diagnosis.

Cleanse gently and avoid picking, scrubbing, or squeezing. Stop shaving the area temporarily, use a clean razor when you resume, and shave in the direction of hair growth with lubrication. Choose loose, breathable clothing where sweat and rubbing are involved. Avoid layering several new acne or antiseptic products at once, since irritation can make the pattern harder to interpret. Record triggers such as exercise, cosmetics, shaving, or a new medicine.

See a clinician if spots are painful, deep, rapidly spreading, repeatedly draining, leaving scars, or accompanied by fever. Seek urgent care for facial swelling, eye involvement, breathing difficulty, or a rapidly worsening allergic-looking eruption. Persistent spots may need an examination to distinguish follicle inflammation from acne, infection, or another rash before treatment is chosen.
