Hair Breakage at the Crown After Bleaching

Bleach removes natural pigment and can leave the shaft more porous and fragile. The crown may receive extra product, sun, heat, brushing, or friction from hats and bedding. Short, uneven hairs, white dots at the ends, and split strands support breakage. Hair that comes away with a white bulb may be shedding from the root instead, which needs a different assessment.

Burning, intense tenderness, blisters, crusting, or marked redness after a chemical service is not routine shaft damage. Scaling and broken hairs can also occur with Scalp Ringworm. Tight extensions or styles may add pulling stress and contribute to Traction Alopecia.

Stop bleaching, relaxing, and overlapping colour onto fragile areas until the hair and scalp have settled. Use lukewarm water, a gentle cleanser, conditioner, and careful detangling from the ends upward. Let hair dry with low heat or air-dry, avoid tight clips, and do not pick at flakes or scabs. A stylist can help plan a lower-stress colour routine, while a dermatologist can assess persistent damage.

Contact a clinician promptly for scalp burning that does not settle, blisters, open skin, pus, spreading redness, or significant pain. Book an assessment if crown thinning continues after processing stops, the scalp is scaly or itchy, or smooth bare areas appear.

Ask whether the crown hairs are chemically broken or being shed, whether the scalp barrier was irritated, and when colour processing could be reconsidered. Share the products used, processing time, heat habits, and photographs from before the change.
