Short answer

H pylori mainly affects the stomach and is not a usual direct cause of shortness of breath, so breathlessness needs separate assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

H pylori
Primarily affects the stomach and digestive system.
Breathlessness
Has lung, heart, blood and allergic causes.
Emergency sign
Severe or rapidly worsening breathing difficulty needs emergency help.

Do not assume a stomach cause

H pylori can cause upper abdominal discomfort, nausea or indigestion, but these symptoms do not explain every breathing problem. Shortness of breath may arise from asthma, acute bronchitis, COPD, bronchiectasis, anaemia or heart-related conditions such as angina and atrial fibrillation. A severe allergic reaction can also impair breathing. The onset, activity level, chest symptoms, cough, wheeze and medical history help determine urgency.

What to do next

Stop exertion and sit upright if you feel breathless. Note whether symptoms began suddenly, occur at rest, or come with chest discomfort, wheeze, fever, cough, palpitations or swelling. Use a prescribed inhaler only as directed. Arrange prompt clinical assessment rather than assuming that H pylori treatment will resolve breathing symptoms; the evaluation may need chest, heart or blood checks.

When breathing trouble is urgent

Call emergency services for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, inability to speak in full sentences, fainting, new confusion, or chest pressure. Sudden breathing difficulty with facial or throat swelling may indicate anaphylaxis. Urgent review is also needed when breathlessness follows exertion with chest pain, or when it is new and unexplained.

Questions for assessment

Could my breathlessness be separate from H pylori? Do I need heart, lung or blood tests? Which symptoms mean emergency care? Could any medicine, allergy or existing condition be contributing?

Questions people ask

Can H pylori directly cause shortness of breath?

It is not a usual direct cause, so new breathlessness should be assessed on its own merits.

Should I wait for H pylori treatment to work?

No. Seek prompt care for new, persistent or worsening breathing symptoms.
