Growing lump on the back of the neck: what to know

Lumps in this area may involve the skin, fatty tissue, muscle, or a lymph node. A recent infection of the throat, ear, scalp, or skin can make a lymph node enlarge. A blocked skin gland, cyst, or other non-cancerous growth can also form a noticeable mass. Less commonly, a persistent or enlarging lump is linked to a tumour, so its location and growth should not be judged at home as a diagnosis.

A clinician will ask when you first noticed it and whether it changes. They may check its size, firmness, mobility, tenderness, the skin over it, and nearby areas. Depending on those findings, imaging or a needle sample may be discussed.

Arrange an appointment, especially if the lump is continuing to grow or has remained after an illness has settled. Note its approximate size, whether it moves under the skin, and any pain, redness, fever, night sweating, or unexplained weight change. Do not squeeze, puncture, or repeatedly press it; this can irritate the tissue and make assessment harder.

Take a list of medicines and relevant medical history to the visit. If testing identifies a tumour, the care team can explain whether a procedure such as tumour removal surgery is appropriate.

Seek urgent medical help if the swelling is accompanied by trouble breathing or swallowing, sudden severe pain, rapidly spreading redness, or marked weakness. Arrange prompt medical review for a hard or fixed lump, skin breakdown, persistent fever, or a lump that keeps enlarging. These features do not establish cancer, but they make timely examination more important.

Ask: What structures could be causing this lump? What changes should I monitor? Do I need imaging or a sample? How soon should results be reviewed? If a lymph node is suspected, could a recent infection explain it?
