Groin yeast infection on skin: what to know

A yeast infection on groin skin causes an itchy, inflamed rash in a warm skin fold, but similar changes can come from irritation or another skin condition. The rash may be bright red, sore, moist, or cracked, with small spots near its edge. It can affect the crease between the thigh and vulva without meaning that the vagina is infected.

Candida grows more easily where heat, moisture, friction, or tight clothing keeps skin from drying. Sweating, skin folds, recent antibiotics, and some health conditions can make irritation more likely. Skin yeast does not always cause vaginal discharge or internal itching. Contact dermatitis, eczema, ringworm, bacterial infection, and vulval skin disease can look alike, so spreading, recurrent, or treatment-resistant redness should be checked.

Gently rinse and pat the fold dry rather than rubbing it. Wear breathable clothing, change damp underwear promptly, and avoid fragranced products, powders, and harsh antiseptics. Do not share towels. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antifungal cream is appropriate and how long to use it; applying a steroid cream alone can sometimes worsen an unrecognised fungal rash. Keep cream away from internal vaginal use unless its instructions specifically allow that.

Seek prompt assessment if the skin is hot, rapidly spreading, very painful, draining pus, blistered, or accompanied by fever. Make an appointment if the rash reaches the vulva, causes marked swelling, keeps returning, or does not improve with appropriate care. People with diabetes, reduced immunity, or pregnancy should ask for tailored advice early.
