Groin Pain While Pregnant: What You Should Know

Short answer
Groin pain while pregnant often comes from stretching ligaments, changing posture, or increased pressure around the pelvis, but severe or unusual pain needs medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common triggers
- Walking, turning in bed, stairs, and standing on one leg
- Helpful habit
- Keep your knees together when turning or getting in and out of a car
- Get assessed
- For severe, worsening, injury-related, or function-limiting pain
What groin pain can mean during pregnancy
As the abdomen grows, the pelvis and hip region adapt to a changing centre of gravity. The round ligaments and other supporting tissues can become irritated, causing pulling or aching in the groin, especially when standing, turning in bed, walking, or getting out of a car. Pelvic girdle discomfort can also spread toward the pubic area, hips, buttocks, or inner thighs.
Pain may be muscular when the inner-thigh muscles work harder to steady the pelvis. Pregnancy does not rule out a separate hip problem, particularly if discomfort is deep in the joint, catches with movement, or began after an injury. Conditions such as hip impingement, a hip labral tear, or hip osteoarthritis are different problems that require clinical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.
What you can do
Reduce movements that trigger a sharp pull, but keep comfortable gentle activity if it does not increase symptoms. Take shorter steps, avoid standing on one leg while dressing, and sit down to put on shoes or trousers. When turning in bed, keep your knees together and move your shoulders and hips as one unit.
Supportive footwear, a pillow between the knees, and warm—not hot—comfort measures may help. Do not start pain medicine, a pelvic support belt, or a new exercise programme without checking that it is suitable for your stage of pregnancy. A physiotherapist with pregnancy and pelvic health experience can assess movement and teach tailored exercises; sports physiotherapy may be relevant only when a clinician confirms that its approach fits your situation.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity team or doctor promptly if groin pain is severe, worsening, follows a fall, or makes walking difficult. Seek urgent help for pain with vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage, regular tightening or contractions, fever, fainting, painful urination, new leg weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Sudden chest pain, breathlessness, or one-sided leg swelling also needs emergency attention.
Arrange a routine review if the pain keeps returning, affects sleep, or does not settle with activity changes. The clinician may examine your hips, back, pelvis, and walking pattern while considering pregnancy-related causes and other conditions.
Questions for your doctor or midwife
Ask: Which movements should I limit, and which activities are appropriate for me? Could this be pelvic girdle pain, a muscle strain, or a hip problem? Is a support belt or physiotherapy assessment suitable? Which warning symptoms should make me call the maternity team immediately?

Questions people ask
Is groin pain during pregnancy always serious?
No. It can reflect normal mechanical strain or pelvic support-tissue irritation, but severe, worsening, injury-related, or unusual pain should be assessed.
Can I exercise with groin pain while pregnant?
Gentle activity may be reasonable when it does not worsen symptoms, but avoid painful movements and ask your maternity clinician or physiotherapist to tailor exercise to you.
When should I call my maternity team?
Call promptly for severe pain, difficulty walking, bleeding, fluid leakage, regular contractions, fever, fainting, or other sudden concerning symptoms.
