What should you know about groin folliculitis treatment?

Folliculitis produces small red or skin-coloured bumps centred on hairs, sometimes with tenderness, itch, or a pustule. Shaving, waxing, tight clothing, sweat, and rubbing can injure the follicle. A clinician may distinguish folliculitis from ingrown hairs, pimples, contact irritation, or a deeper boil by examining the distribution and drainage. The presence of bumps does not by itself identify the cause or mean that antibiotics are needed.

Stop shaving and waxing temporarily, wash gently, and keep the area dry. Choose loose clothing and change out of damp garments. Do not pick or lance lesions. A clinician may recommend topical antibiotic therapy for selected superficial bacterial cases, while more extensive or deeper infection may need antibiotic therapy for skin infection. These medicines are not interchangeable with antifungal or steroid products, so use the treatment directed for the diagnosed cause.
