What should you know about groin acanthosis nigricans?

The skin may become darker, thicker, and soft or velvety, sometimes with mild itch or a noticeable change in texture. Acanthosis nigricans can affect several folds, including the neck, underarms, and groin. In the groin, rubbing, moisture, and shaving irritation may make the colour more noticeable, but they do not explain every case.

A clinician may ask about weight change, family history, menstrual or hormonal symptoms, medicines, and other dark patches. The diagnosis matters because an infection, eczema, post-inflammatory pigment, or another condition can look similar.

Arrange a medical assessment rather than scrubbing the area or using unlabelled bleaching products. Keep the fold dry, choose breathable clothing, reduce rubbing, and pause shaving or fragranced products if they sting. Treating an underlying contributor may improve the skin gradually.

A clinician may discuss topical retinoids or, after the cause is clear, a chemical peel or laser toning. These treatments can irritate sensitive folds and should not be started on broken, inflamed, or infected skin.

Book a review if the patch is new, spreading, thickening quickly, itchy, painful, cracked, or associated with similar changes elsewhere.
