What should you know about gradient compression garments?

Short answer

Gradient compression garments apply firmer pressure near the limb and gradually less pressure farther away, helping limit fluid build-up when fitted and used appropriately.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Pressure
Firmer at one end and gradually lighter along the limb.
Common forms
Sleeves, gloves, stockings and other fitted garments.

How the pressure pattern works

A sleeve, glove, stocking or other garment can provide a controlled squeeze around an affected area. The graduated pattern is designed to support movement of excess lymph fluid towards working lymph vessels and nearby tissues. It does not remove the underlying cause of swelling, and it is not interchangeable with an ordinary tight item of clothing.

The correct style, length, fabric and pressure depend on the body area, skin condition, swelling pattern and movement needs. A garment may be used during the day, during activity, or at another schedule recommended by a lymphoedema professional.

Using one safely

Have the limb assessed and measured before buying a medical compression garment. Put it on according to the fitting instructions, checking that it lies smooth rather than folding into a narrow band. Keep the skin clean and dry, inspect it when the garment is removed, and follow the washing and replacement guidance so its shape and pressure remain reliable.

Tell the clinician about numbness, fragile skin, open areas, circulation problems, heart or kidney conditions, or pain that changes with compression. Do not increase the pressure or wear time on your own. Lymphoedema therapy may combine compression with movement, skin care and other techniques.

When to pause and seek care

Remove the garment and seek prompt clinical advice if you develop new or worsening pain, marked numbness, colour change, coldness, blistering or skin damage. Urgent assessment is needed for rapidly increasing swelling, spreading redness, warmth, fever, or sudden breathlessness, because these symptoms can signal a problem requiring treatment rather than a fitting adjustment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which garment type and pressure are suitable for your swelling, how long to wear it, whether you need help putting it on, and which changes mean you should stop. Ask how to combine compression with exercise, skin care and your wider lymphoedema plan.

Questions people ask

Can a compression garment cure lymphoedema?

It can help control fluid build-up and swelling, but it does not cure the condition or replace assessment.

What if it feels painful?

Remove it and contact your care team, especially if pain comes with numbness, coldness or a colour change.
