Short answer

Gout treatment in the foot combines early flare care with long-term urate control, pressure relief and review of any persistent joint damage.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

During a flare
Rest, protect the joint and follow the prescribed plan.
Footwear
Choose roomy shoes that do not rub swollen areas.
Long-term goal
Reduce crystal build-up and protect walking ability.

Why the foot is affected

Gout commonly affects a toe joint, but the midfoot, ankle and other foot joints can also become inflamed. During a flare, the area may be hot, red, swollen and extremely tender, making a sheet or shoe feel uncomfortable. Between flares, ongoing crystal deposits may stiffen a joint or form a tophus. Foot pain and swelling have several possible causes, so a clinician may examine the skin, circulation, joint movement and pattern of symptoms before confirming gout. Chronic kidney disease can affect medicine choices and urate removal.

Steps that can help

At the start of a flare, rest the foot in a supported position and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods. Take the prescribed anti-inflammatory or other flare medicine as directed; do not add over-the-counter painkillers without checking that they fit your kidney, stomach and heart health. Wear wide, soft footwear and avoid pressure over a tender joint. Once the flare plan is settled, long-term urate-lowering treatment can reduce future crystal build-up. A podiatry or orthopaedic review may help when a deformity, tophus or stiff joint changes walking.

When to seek care

Get urgent assessment for a hot swollen foot with fever, chills, spreading redness or a wound, because infection may need immediate treatment. Seek prompt help if the foot becomes pale, blue, numb or unusually cold, or if pain follows an injury and you cannot bear weight. A flare that is not improving with the agreed plan, or repeated swelling in the ankle or toe, deserves a treatment review rather than repeated self-treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which medicine to start at the first sign of a flare, whether your long-term treatment is controlling urate, what footwear or activity is safe while the foot settles, and whether a persistent lump needs imaging or specialist care.
