What should you know about gout on the side of the foot?

Short answer
Gout can inflame joints along the side of the foot, causing sudden tenderness, warmth, redness, and swelling that should be assessed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why the side of the foot can hurt
Gout is caused by urate crystals irritating a joint. Although the big toe is well known, the midfoot and joints near the outer edge can also become inflamed. Pain may start abruptly and make socks, shoes, or light touch uncomfortable. The location does not prove that the problem is gout: a sprain, pressure from footwear, arthritis, tendon trouble, or infection can cause similar symptoms. A clinician may ask about the onset, examine nearby joints, and consider tests to distinguish these possibilities.
Care during a flare
Reduce walking and avoid tight shoes while the foot is sore. Elevate the foot when resting, and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods if that feels soothing. Do not place ice directly on the skin. Take an advised gout medicine promptly if you already have a flare plan; avoid borrowing someone else’s medication. Mention kidney problems, ulcers, heart disease, pregnancy, and blood thinners before using anti-inflammatory treatment. Record whether the pain followed an injury and whether the redness is spreading.
When the foot needs prompt review
Seek prompt assessment for a first episode, severe pain, inability to bear weight, or swelling after an injury. Get urgent help for fever, chills, rapidly spreading redness, a draining wound, or feeling faint or very unwell. These features can signal infection or another problem requiring timely care. Arrange follow-up if episodes recur or the foot remains swollen after the flare settles.
Useful questions
Ask which joint is involved, whether imaging or fluid testing is needed, and which treatment is safe with your current medicines. Ask how to protect the foot during future flares and whether recurring attacks need prevention.
