What should you know about a good sport massage?

Short answer

A good sports massage is tailored to your symptoms, training, and injury status, with pressure that remains tolerable and clinically appropriate.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Myofascial release is another hands-on approach

What it may help

Massage may help you feel less tight and move more comfortably when symptoms are related to overuse or muscle tension. It is different from medical treatment for a tear, fracture, infection, or circulation problem. A [Muscle Strain](/conditions/muscle-strain/) and a [Muscle Contusion](/conditions/muscle-contusion/) may need assessment before hands-on work. For a broader soft-tissue approach, [Myofascial Release](/treatments/manual-and-manipulative-therapy/myofascial-release/) is another option.

Before and after a session

Tell the therapist exactly where the discomfort is, when it began, and which movement brings it on. Mention bruising, swelling, skin problems, blood-thinning medicine, pregnancy, and recent surgery. Wear clothing that allows access while preserving your comfort. Afterward, use gentle movement and fluids as appropriate, and avoid immediately testing a painful area with intense training.

When massage should wait

Seek prompt medical assessment for a calf that is suddenly swollen, hot, red, or painful, especially with breathlessness or chest pain. Do not massage a suspected fracture, severe tear, rapidly expanding bruise, open wound, feverish area, or limb with new numbness or weakness. Persistent [Calf Pain](/symptoms/calf-pain/) deserves evaluation. Ordinary [Muscle Soreness After Exercise](/symptoms/muscle-soreness-after-exercise/) should gradually settle; worsening pain is a reason to pause and seek advice.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether massage is suitable for the diagnosis, how much pressure is reasonable, and whether physiotherapy or another treatment would better restore movement. Ask the therapist what findings would make them stop the session and refer you for medical care.

Questions people ask

Is sports massage appropriate after every workout?

Not necessarily. Mild soreness may respond to gentle care, but significant pain, swelling, bruising, or reduced strength should be assessed first.

Should massage hurt to be effective?

Pressure should remain tolerable and should not create sharp pain, increasing swelling, numbness, or weakness.
