When symptoms occur, they may include painful urination, unusual discharge, pelvic or testicular discomfort, rectal irritation, sore throat, or eye redness. Symptoms vary by body site, and the absence of symptoms does not exclude infection.

Without treatment, infection can move beyond its original site and cause complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease. It can also be passed to sexual partners, including when the infected person feels well.

Arrange STI screening if you have symptoms, a partner with gonorrhoea, or a possible exposure. Tell the clinician about vaginal, anal, and oral contact so samples come from each relevant site. Take prescribed antibiotics as directed and avoid self-treating with medicine left from another illness.

Avoid sex until treatment advice has been followed and partners have been assessed. A clinician can explain partner notification confidentially and arrange testing for other infections when appropriate.

Seek prompt care for pelvic pain, fever, painful swollen joints, a widespread rash, severe testicular pain, or eye pain and vision change. Emergency help is needed for breathing difficulty or rapidly worsening eye symptoms.
