What should you know about going bald after hair transplant?

A transplant moves selected follicles; it does not stop untreated hair loss in the surrounding native hair. Early shedding can make the treated area look less dense before growth becomes easier to judge. Later thinning may reflect androgenetic alopecia, female pattern hair loss, traction, or a mismatch between the original plan and future loss. Patchy loss, scalp inflammation or scarring needs a different assessment from gradual thinning.

Compare photographs taken in similar lighting and follow the transplant team’s washing and activity instructions. Arrange a review if density continues to fall, the hairline is receding, or loss affects areas that were not transplanted. A clinician may examine the scalp and discuss medical treatment, PRP for hair loss, or a further plan only after identifying the pattern and cause.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, heavy bleeding or wound separation. Seek assessment for sudden shedding, bald patches, marked scaling, tenderness or shiny areas of scalp. These findings are not explained by ordinary gradual pattern thinning and should not be covered with another procedure before review.

Ask whether the pattern fits expected shedding or ongoing androgenetic alopecia, how the donor area looks, and whether native hair is thinning. Ask about examination, treatment options, timing of reassessment, and how a future procedure could affect available donor follicles.
