What should you know about gluteus medius trigger points?

Short answer

Gluteus medius trigger points are irritable muscle areas that can cause outer-hip pain and referred discomfort.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What this can mean

The gluteus medius sits on the side of the pelvis and helps keep the pelvis level while you walk, climb stairs, or stand on one leg. A sensitive spot may hurt when pressed and may send aching toward the buttock, outer thigh, or hip. Similar symptoms can come from tendon irritation, the lower back, the sacroiliac region, or the hip joint, so a trigger point is not confirmed by pain location alone.

Assessment usually considers your movement, strength, posture, tenderness, and the activities that provoke symptoms. Myofascial pain syndrome is a broader condition involving painful muscle and fascia areas.

What to do next

Reduce activities that sharply increase pain for a short period, while keeping gentle walking and comfortable hip movement. A physiotherapist may guide graded strengthening for the hip abductors, load management, manual treatment, or a home programme. Trigger point therapy may be discussed, and dry needling is another technique that requires an individual assessment. Avoid forceful self-massage directly over a painful area if it causes bruising, numbness, or worsening pain.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment if pain persists, limits sleep or walking, or returns whenever normal activity resumes. Seek urgent medical care after a significant injury if you cannot bear weight, or if hip pain comes with fever, marked swelling, new leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the groin.

Questions for your doctor

Could the pain come from the tendon, hip joint, or back rather than a trigger point? Which movements should I temporarily modify? What findings would support physiotherapy, imaging, or another treatment? How will we judge whether the plan is helping?

Questions people ask

Can a trigger point cause pain away from the muscle?

Yes. An irritable muscle area can produce referred pain in nearby regions, although other hip, spine, and tendon conditions can feel similar.

Should I stretch the gluteus medius?

Gentle, comfortable movement may help, but aggressive stretching can aggravate an irritable area. A clinician can tailor the dose.
