Short answer

A glucose tolerance test drink contains a measured amount of glucose so blood samples can show how your body responds during testing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

What it contains
A measured glucose load used under clinical instructions.
During the appointment
Blood samples are collected at scheduled times.
Symptoms to report
Vomiting, faintness, severe dizziness, or sudden weakness.

What is the glucose tolerance test drink?

The drink creates a consistent starting point for the test. The clinician uses your blood results, together with the sample timing and your health context, to decide what the findings mean.

Why the drink is used

Glucose enters the bloodstream after the drink is taken. The body normally responds by releasing insulin, which helps move glucose from the blood into cells. The test observes this process through samples collected before and after the drink.

The flavour may be very sweet, and some people experience nausea, bloating, shakiness, headache, or dizziness. Feeling uncomfortable does not explain the result on its own, so report symptoms rather than trying to interpret them yourself.

What to do on test day

Use the preparation instructions from the testing centre as your guide. They may include fasting, avoiding certain drinks, and taking regular medicines at a specified time. Check before making changes, especially if you use medicine that affects blood glucose.

Drink the preparation exactly as directed and remain in the testing area for the required samples. Avoid eating, smoking, and physical exertion unless the staff say otherwise. If the taste is difficult or you feel sick, tell the team instead of leaving without advice.

When to seek care

During the appointment, alert staff promptly for vomiting, near-fainting, severe dizziness, unusual sweating, or sudden weakness. They can assess you and document whether the drink was fully absorbed.

Get urgent medical help for collapse, trouble breathing, severe confusion, or symptoms that rapidly worsen. If you remain unwell after the appointment, call the testing centre or your usual healthcare service for tailored advice.

Useful questions for your doctor

Ask what preparation applies to you, whether your medicines should be taken before the appointment, how long you must stay, and what happens if you cannot tolerate the drink. Ask when to expect the result and who will explain the next steps.

Questions people ask

Why must I stay at the testing centre?

The test depends on samples taken at set times, and staff need to observe how you are feeling after the drink.

Can I take my usual medicine before the test?

Ask the clinic or prescribing clinician because instructions depend on the medicine, your health, and whether fasting is required.
