Glucagon-like peptide agonists explained

GLP-1 is a hormone released by the gut after food. A GLP-1 receptor agonist activates the same type of signal for longer, helping the pancreas release insulin when blood glucose is elevated and reducing glucagon release. It can slow the movement of food from the stomach and reduce hunger. These effects explain why the medicines may be prescribed in diabetes care and, for selected products, weight management.

Follow the prescribed schedule and dose increases rather than changing the amount based on appetite or a single glucose reading. Eat slowly, choose fluids regularly, and report ongoing digestive symptoms. Tell your clinician about kidney disease, gallbladder disease, pancreatitis, pregnancy, planned procedures, and every medicine or supplement you use. Keep appointments so glucose control, weight-related goals, and tolerability can be reviewed.

Arrange urgent assessment for severe persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty, or facial swelling. Contact your clinician promptly if constipation becomes severe, urine becomes very dark with poor intake, or you develop fever and upper abdominal pain. These symptoms have several possible causes and need assessment rather than self-diagnosis.
